How Does Meditation Work?

There are many forms of basic meditation techniques. They involve focussing on one thing, say the breath, and the effect is to bring a positive feeling of physical, mental and emotional well being to the meditator.

In general, using basic meditation techniques, the meditator will 'feel better' than if they did not meditate.

If you were to ask your average scientist "How does meditation work?" then they will give you their best ideas of what they think is going on. If you were to ask your average meditation teacher about meditation and how it works, he or she would also give you their views. These views tend to include beliefs and ideas about spirituality.

My own view is this. Depending on what you are using meditation for, depends on wether meditation actually works or not.

If you are using meditation for short term relief of stress and anxiety, then it does work. I don't know how and I am not really interested how, as long as it does.

If you are using meditation to positively change the way you feel on a day to day basis, then again I would say that it does work, though I have very little idea of how it works.

However, if you are using basic meditation techniques to discover more about the nature of yourself, or to discover and explore other regions or dimensions of yourself, that you are currently unaware of, then basic meditation techniques do not work.

You will still be left with more questions than answers.
You will have no more of an idea of your true nature than if you had never bothered.
Your mind will be left to fill in the gaps, to imagine who and what you really are.
There is no shortage of people telling you what to 'believe' in.
What to put your 'faith' in.
And so, having studied meditation, possibly for years and years, you are once again left in the dark, with no more certainty than when you started.

Basic meditation techniques, whilst helping you physically, mentally and emotionally, will not reveal your true nature to you. In that sense, basic meditation techniques do not work.

Advanced meditation techniques have the power to reveal yourself to yourself.
