I get asked about 'the best meditation position' almost every week. There is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding about which meditation position is best, that I would like to clarify it here. For a fuller explanation of meditation positions, watch my free Meditation Class video.
The primary purpose of meditation is for you to become increasingly aware of yourself.
This normally involves you becoming still. However, if you lie down, and become still, you will probably fall asleep, and lose your awareness.
So, in most cases, it helps for you to remain upright. That is, your spine remains in a vertical position. You can either sit on a chair, or sit on cushions on the floor, but the important part is to keep your spine upright and relaxed.
The next important element of the meditation position, is to keep your chin up, that is, at 90% to your neck. If your chin tips forward, you will drift off to sleep and lose your awareness. If your chin tips back, again you will fall asleep, lose your awareness, only this time you will have a very sore neck! So keep your chin level.
Some people ask about the importance of a cross legged position. From an energetic point of view, ie; the flow of energy around your body, there are reasons why it may be beneficial for you to sit in a cross legged position. However, if you are going to use the Advanced Meditation Techniques, which will take you far beyond the limits of your bodies physical energy sysyem, then sitting cross legged is not necessary.
So, you are sat upright, either on the floor or in a chair. Your chin is held level. Now, again it is not imperative that you put you arms in a certain position, but it may help you to relax and open out, if you keep your arms and hands away from your tummy. Maybe rest your hands on your thighs, or knees. The important thing here is to keep your tummy area open.
No matter what meditation position that you use, the important thing is that you relax, you are comfortable and you remain vigilant.
