If you are a member of a gym, you probably go 2 or 3 times a week.
If you like to go for a jog, then maybe you go 4 or 5 times a week.
Then why is it, that if you meditate, you are encouraged to meditate daily, that is every single day?
The reason is this.
When you meditate daily, something very special happens. Some of the more obvious benefits of meditation become apparent after a very short while. For instance, your ability to concentrate, your ability to relax, and even your ability to think clearer soon become much improved.
However, if you meditate daily, something else happens that is beyond your control, your very sense of 'self' begins to change. In simplistic terms, you start to take on the attruibutes of stillness. You become more neutral, you become less polarised, you become less dogmatic, less stressed and you become much more still.
In this new found stillness of daily meditation, you begin to make observations that are impossible to make whilst firmly attached to a constantly moving mind.
Just imagine if you where on a fast moving roller coaster, right now. Could you take in the finer details of your environment? Could you distinguish between a real live human being, and an inanimate, dead, waxwork model? No, you couldn't. You could not percieve what is real and what is not, because you are moving too fast.
Through the practice of daily meditation, you are giving yourself the very best chance to slow down, to percieve things as they are, not as they appear to be from the viewpoint of a speeding mind.
Daily meditation becomes easier and easier. As you steep yourself in more and more stillness, it stays with you longer and longer, into your busy day. Just as if you go into a flower shop, the fragrence of the flowers imbue your clothes, your hair, and your senses, then so it is with stillness.
The stillness and clarity that you get from your daily meditation, is one of lifes greatest gifts and is yours to enjoy.
