Meditation For Weightloss

"Can you use meditation for weight loss?" I am asked about this on a regular basis.
And my answer is always the same.
Yes.
And No.
I am sorry about that, but I can explain.

First of all, let me say again, I am not a health professional. If you want any advice concerning your health, then you should consult a health professional. Ok, now I have got that out the way...

If you want to use meditation for weightloss, then you need to find out why you are overweight in the first place. (You may not even be overweight). Assuming that you are overweight, ask yourself why you are eating too much food.

A lot of people who want to use meditation for weightloss, actually eat food to suppress feelings other than hunger. For instance, you may be feeling bored, so you eat. You may be feeling rejected, so you eat. You may be feeling unloved, so you eat.

These eating patterns go on just below the surface, unnoticed by your conscious mind. By learning to meditate, you will become more aware of your feelings, and your reactions to your feelings. It will enable you to see the process - before the food has entered your mouth. That is it.

There is no meditation for weightloss miracle.

Having said that, many people eat to comfort themselves when they are experiencing low self esteem, poor self image, general anxiety and many other mental and emotional conditions.

If you are one of those people, I would strongly advise that you learn how to meditate. The gentle process of meditation, will in time, improve your self image, it will boost your self esteem, it will reduce the amount of anxiety that you experience.

In a nutshell, you will feel so much better about yourself. You will not need to comfort yourself so much, with food, or anything else that you do. So, in that sense, I think you could use meditation for weightloss.
